Do I Need to Upgrade My Computers Memory?
A number of my clients complain of having a slow computer, Usually what happens is they have bought a cheap computer with the bare minimum of memory needed to run Windows, which worked fine at the start, but now they have had the computer for a year & its starting to run very very slow.

If you have done all the Spyware & Virus checks mentioned in my other article "Easy ways to keep your computer free from spyware" and your computer is still running slow then you should look at your computers memory & consider upgrading it. You can never have "too much" memory & increasing the amount will boost the speed your computer opens applications, such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Elements etc, and also boost your boot up time.
If your computer has some of the following symptoms, chances are it wont cost a great deal to fix
Takes a long time to start-up Takes a long time to open & close programs Your hard drive is forever loading & never stops
You most likely just need an easy memory upgrade. If your running
Windows 98/ME & have 129MB of RAM (or less) increase this to at least 512MB or RAM (InstalLED Memory)
WindowsXP & have 256MB of RAM (or less) increase this to at least 1GB of RAM (InstalLED Memory)
Windows Vista & have 1GB of RAM (or less) increase this to at least 2GB of RAM (InstalLED Memory)
Windows 7 & have 2GB of RAM (or less) increase this to at least 3GB of RAM (InstalLED Memory)
How do I check?
Easy! Use the following two keys. First press & hold the "Windows Key" (The one with the Windows logo on it). Then (while still holding the Windows Key) press the "Pause Break" key. You should see a window appear on the Screen & about half way down you will see "Installed Memory" or "RAM" this is the number you should note down.
Once you have located & checked if you need to increase the memory, contact your local computer dealer & get some prices. Do shop around as memory changes in price & can be cheap one week & expensive the next. Also consider buying second hand, as memory does not generally degrade.
